What to expect in Physical Education
Physical Education classes are held twice a week for 40 minutes, offering a comprehensive, sequential program designed to be developmentally appropriate and aligned with the standards set by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE). The curriculum supports the goals outlined in Standard 3.6 of the Vermont Framework for Standards and Learning Opportunities and adheres to Vermont's Physical Education Grade Expectations.
The majority of class time is dedicated to moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, with a strong emphasis on promoting lifetime fitness. The program includes a wide range of activities such as skiing, snowshoeing, skating, walking, jump rope, dance, and various sports like soccer, hockey, and bowling.
The PE teacher uses the FitnessGram assessments to track student progress and focuses on equipping students with the skills, knowledge, and attitudes needed for lifelong physical activity. Safety is a top priority; equipment is regularly replaced, and students are provided with mouth guards for activities that require additional precaution.
We are committed to maintaining a consistent PE schedule and do not remove students from these classes for other instructional activities. The curriculum is integrated with other school programs, particularly health education and science, where students explore the benefits of physical activity in the context of human growth, physiology, and personal health behaviors.
Since the opening of the new gym at the Center School, physical education classes have been more consistent with minimal interruptions. Students are expected to wear appropriate clothing and footwear for fitness activities, including sneakers or non-marking court shoes for indoor classes. The program is inclusive, designed for all students unless medically contraindicated. Fitness data is kept for each student and is available to parents upon request.
