Sustainability at Westminster Center School

At Westminster Center School, we’re committed to building a greener future. Our sustainability efforts include both the installation of new solar panels and the use of our on-campus greenhouse for hands-on learning. Together, these projects show our students and community how renewable energy and sustainable food practices play an important role in our world.

Solar Project

In 2025, Westminster Center School partnered with Southern Vermont Solar to install new solar panels on our campus. This project represents a major investment in sustainability, reducing energy costs while lowering our environmental impact.

  • Clean Energy: The panels generate renewable electricity to help power our school.
  • Learning Tool: They provide students with a real-world example of science, technology, and environmental responsibility.
  • Community Impact: Lower energy costs mean more resources for student learning while supporting a greener future for our community.

Energy Produced

~149,000 kWh every year

That’s enough electricity to power our school for a whole year!

Hands-On Learning in the Garden

Our school’s Learning Garden is more than a place to grow plants — it’s an outdoor classroom. Students dig, plant, and care for the garden while exploring science, math, and the environment in real-world ways. It also supports reading, writing, and problem-solving by giving students a living space to apply what they learn in class.

Learning Beyond the Walls

Our outdoor classroom gives students a space to learn surrounded by nature. Here, lessons in science, reading, and the arts come alive in new ways. This space encourages teamwork and creativity while making learning feel fresh, active, and connected to the world around them.
